Domain Management (multi domain hosting)

You are using a mulit domain hosting and want to add more domains to your primary domain name:

Before you can add a domain to a multi domain hosting, you make sure that you are not using any package for this domain (like DNS & Mail).

There are different options to manage a domain name with your multi domain hosting:

Pointer:

Login to your Control Panel for the multi domain hosting and click on "Hosting Features" -> "Domains" -> "Pointer" at the left menu. There will be no email service available, if you use the pointer. You can point the the domain (http - website) to you primary domain name. Therefore, there are 3 different possibilities available:
  • Permanent Redirect (301): With this forwarder the user can see, that example.at points to example.com. 301 also shows the search engines, that there will be the same content under two different domain names available for a long time.
  • Temporary Redirect (302): With this forwarder the user can see, that example.at points to example.com. 302 also shows the search engines, that the forwarder will only exists temporary.
  • Server Alias: With this forwarder example.at will be shown at the browser. The user can not see, that he will be forwareded to the website of example.com. An email forwarding is set up automatically. If you created the email address office@example.com, emails sent to office@example.at will be forwareded to the .com address. Please notice: If you point with a Server Alias, the forwarding ist not shown to the search engines. The website (with the same content) is reachable at two different domain names. This can have a negative effect on the ranking.

Secondary:

Login to your Control Panel for the multi domain hosting and click on "Hosting Features" -> "Domains" -> "Secondary" at the left menu. If you add a secondary domain, a separate sub host (for the website) is created and the email Services is activated.  You can edit and view the services by clicking on "Change Domain" and selecting the secondary domain, right at the top.

Of course you can point your secondary domain to another website to, if you do not wish to create a special website for the domain name. Therefore, there a two different possibilities available:
  • .htaccess file: Click on "Hosting Features" -> "Htaccess" and the button "Redirects". For "Redirect From" use only "/" (slash) and for "Redirect To" use the whole URL where you want to point to http://www.domain.com/subdirectory_optional. As "Redirect Typ" you can choose between Permanent (shows the search engines, that there will be the same content under two different domain names available for a long time) or Temporary (shows the search engines, that the forwarder will only exists temporary). With this forwarder the user can see, that example.at points to example.com. Make sure, that the .htaccess file is enabled after the change.
  • index.html: If the user should not see, that there is a forwarder to another site, you can point it by using a php Code at the index.hmtl file. In this case, the forwarding ist not shown to the search engines. The website (with the same content) is reachable at two different domain names. This can have a negative effect on the ranking.
